Walking Safaris: The Serengeti on Foot

The engine stops, the doors open, and suddenly the Serengeti is no longer something you watch. It is something you are standing in.

On foot, the small things come into focus.

On a game drive you cover distance. On foot you cover detail: the age of a footprint, the dung beetle rolling its prize, the flick of an ear in long grass a hundred metres away. Walking changes the way you see the bush.

Who leads the walk

Every walk is led by an armed guide, who sets a calm pace and keeps the group safe. Before you set off, your guide explains how to walk — single file, quietly, and always following instructions.

Small groups only

Walks are capped at six guests for intimacy and safety. Walking safaris are for guests aged twelve and over.

What you might see

Tracks pressed into the earth, birds you would miss from a vehicle, plants used in traditional medicine, and — at a careful distance — the animals themselves. Big game is never approached on foot.

What to wear

  • Neutral colours: khaki, olive or sand.
  • Comfortable closed walking shoes.
  • A hat, sunscreen and water.
