Most first-time safari guests pack for heat and then spend the first morning drive wishing they had brought a fleece. Here is what actually earns its place in your bag.

Luggage: soft and light
- Bring a soft bag, not a hard suitcase. Light aircraft to Seronera airstrip usually allow around 15 kg per person.
- Tanzania does not allow plastic carrier bags, so pack toiletries in fabric pouches.
- Leave the formal wear at home. Evenings at camp are relaxed and comfortable.
Clothing
- Earth tones — khaki, olive, sand. Dark blue and black can attract tsetse flies; bright white shows dust.
- A warm fleece or light down jacket for early mornings and evenings.
- Long sleeves and trousers for the evenings, when insects come out.
- Comfortable closed shoes for walking safaris, plus sandals for camp.
- A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
Useful extras
- Binoculars — ideally one pair each. You will use them more than you expect.
- A camera with spare batteries and memory cards. Your tent has solar power and USB charging.
- Sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent.
- A small torch or head torch, although rangers walk you to your tent after dark.
Health and documents
- A valid passport and any visa required for Tanzania.
- Malaria is present in Tanzania — speak to your doctor about prevention before you travel.
- A yellow fever certificate may be required depending on where you travel from.
- Travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.
